Nintendo Switch Online Surpasses 34 Million Subscribers

Nintendo recently announced that their Nintendo Switch Online service has amassed over 34 million subscribers, as of September 30, 2024. This information was shared during a presentation by Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, which was part of the company’s second quarter financial results and corporate management policy briefing. The briefing delved into the structural changes within their video game platform business.

This figure represents a dip from the over 36 million subscribers recorded in September 2022. Nintendo attributes this decline to a shortage of new game releases emphasizing online play over the past year. On a brighter note, the company notes continued growth in subscriptions to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack since its debut in 2021.

In an effort to enhance the appeal of subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo has recently introduced a new perk: Nintendo Music. This music streaming service is available exclusively to subscribers and can be accessed via a smartphone app.

When asked by a shareholder if Nintendo Music might eventually be accessible to non-subscribers, Furukawa explained that the primary goal of Nintendo Switch Online has always been to enrich the Nintendo Switch experience.

“Nintendo Music is designed for Nintendo Switch Online members, allowing them to enjoy Nintendo’s game music on their smart devices,” Furukawa stated. He emphasized that game music plays a crucial role in their content offerings, and the service is part of their strategy to broaden access to Nintendo Intellectual Property. “We introduced Nintendo Music to deliver this game music to our consumers in a uniquely Nintendo way.”

Furukawa also mentioned, “We believe that if people listen to Nintendo Music and it triggers fond memories of our games, it might entice them to revisit those games.” He added, “Ultimately, we hope that Nintendo Music will give people an additional reason to maintain their Nintendo Switch Online memberships.”
