REVIEW / Cube Snake Game on PC

If you owned a Nokia phone back in the bustling ’90s, you probably spent countless hours playing Snake. This game, simple yet devilishly addictive, occupied our phone screens long before we started throwing around the term "smartphone." The concept was straightforward: guide your snake as it slithers its way through food items, growing longer with each bite. The challenge was to keep it going without running into its own tail. As is often the case, the simplest ideas can become the most engaging, and Snake was no exception. Its format has been echoed in various games over the years, and every time I encounter it, I feel a fond wave of nostalgia. That’s precisely why I’m diving into Cube Snake, the PC game taking us down memory lane today.

When it comes to picking a game, a key question is: what are you hoping to find in a title? This becomes crucial for a game like Cube Snake, guiding how you’ll measure your enjoyment. Here, it’s all about managing expectations.

Cube Snake faithfully captures the essence of the original Snake game. Your snake navigates across the surface and two walls of a cube, snapping up goodies as they pop into view. Just like before, the goal is to see how many snacks you can eat before losing control and crashing into your tail. Adding a twist to the formula, a fever bar builds up over time. In fever mode, a flurry of snacks appears and the game speeds up temporarily before settling back to normal. Then, it’s all about seeing just how far you can push.

As I mentioned earlier, Cube Snake’s simplicity is its charm. This is a game meant for quick sessions between tasks, and it fits that niche perfectly. Its brief, fast-paced rounds give it that "just one more try" appeal, making it a possible time-stealer. It’s great for short breaks or for those high-score fanatics who thrive on outdoing themselves.

We live in an era where gaming is often about the "more"—more levels, more unlockables, more complexity. Unfortunately, if you’re seeking expansive levels or a plethora of unlockables, Cube Snake might not satisfy those cravings, which could dock a few points in some people’s books. High scores aren’t the only reason players game these days, and while that’s fine, a little extra wouldn’t hurt. A storyline, a few levels, or customizable features could keep players engaged beyond just scoring higher.

That said, none of this takes away from Cube Snake being a fun game. The truth is, you’re paying a mere £2.49, and there’s even a welcome 10% discount to sweeten the deal. Complaints about value aren’t sustainable when the price tag is this modest.

Ultimately, if you’re after something simple and addictive to pass the time, Cube Snake is a solid choice. It’s a cheerful and bug-free update of a mobile classic, with intuitive controls. It’s a flawless pick for anyone who enjoys casual games that can be picked up for a few minutes, or longer, if you find yourself hopelessly hooked. For those nostalgic for the original Snake, it’s an obvious win. Kudos all around.

In summary, Cube Snake resurrects a beloved classic with panache. If you’re after nostalgia, quick play sessions, or a pursuit of high scores, this game will hit the spot. For those craving additional features, you might feel something’s missing, but I’m content with what’s on offer. This revamp of Snake is worth every penny of the asking price, no doubt about it.
