Okay, so Codemasters has decided to hit the brakes on making more World Rally Championship games. They’re also wrapping up updates for EA Sports WRC. Kind of like, “Alright, we’re done here.” They’ve worked hard on something called the Hard Chargers content pack for EA Sports WRC and now, well, it’s a wrap.
It’s weird because Codemasters was all about giving VR love to games like EA Sports WRC, DiRT Rally, and DiRT Rally 2.0. I mean, the VR bit was their jam, right? But now, rally fans better start scouting for a new VR hero ‘cause the ride’s ending here.
The big reveal had that classic, “Yeah, every good thing has to stop sometime,” vibe. They announced, “We’re hitting pause on new rally games. But hey, EA Sports WRC is still out there for you folks to enjoy.” Kind of what you’d expect, really. Sad but, you know, reality.
Now, this got me down memory lane. Remember Codemasters’ long history with rally? Way back in the early ‘90s, they were around when Paris to Dakar Rally hit the scene. And then they totally revved up with Colin McRae Rally in ’98. Sold over three million in Europe alone. Those were some good times, man.
All their focus just stayed on driving games and VR. I remember in 2016, DiRT Rally VR was like, “Whoa, VR racing at its peak!” The follow-up wasn’t too shabby either. Now, there’s some talk that EA might’ve cut a bunch of jobs. Over 300 maybe? But, well, who really knows?
For VR rally lovers, choices are kind of thin. Will Codemasters update VR compatibility? Maybe, maybe not. Their next thing, F1 25, will still have PC VR support. And hey, if another game decides to race onto the scene, you bet I’ll holler.
