Man, I gotta say, hearing the buzz around the PAX East thing for this Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy mashup really got me going. Like, the whole place was vibrating with these wild screams. Makes me think Wizards of the Coast hit it out of the park with this RPG crossover thing. If you missed it, you gotta catch the two-hour show they live-streamed — it’s full of surprises like Chocobos (those weird birds) and these stunning land cards that look like they popped out of your favorite Final Fantasy scenes. No lie.
Anyway, so back in February — or was it March? No, February. Wizards gave us a sneak peek at some cards. But now, PAX East gives us this deeper look, like, not just at the cards themselves, but how the whole gameplay’s gonna roll out. It’s like when you know there’s cake, but suddenly there’s also frosting and sprinkles. You get what I mean?
Oh, and there’s more. They’re bringing back Yoshitaka Amano, that artist whose work kinda blows my mind every time. He’s drawn a fresh take on Kefka (love or hate him, he’s iconic) plus a bunch of other cards. Amano’s art alone is worth checking out the set — just saying.
This isn’t the first time Wizards has gone for a crossover; I mean, they’ve done everything from teaming up with Lord of the Rings to even weird stuff like Spongebob. Yes, really. So, no shocker, this release is expected to be huge. According to Chris Cocks over at Hasbro — yeah, he’s the big boss there — this Final Fantasy set is their top-seller already. Quite the claim, right? Especially with the world economy doing backflips.
And, here’s the kicker — we’ve still got a month till the release. Mark June 13 on your calendar because that’s when Magic: The Gathering — Final Fantasy officially drops. Can’t wait that long? Yeah, didn’t think so. There’s this pre-order thing if you’re desperate to get your hands on it early. But seriously, who isn’t?
