Lost in Random from 2021 was this wild ride, not even close to a roguelike, but the folks behind it seemed to think, “Hey, this could totally work in a dice-throwing, fast-action genre.” Weird, right?
“So, making Lost in Random into a roguelike just kinda clicked for us,” says Martin Storm, the guy leading the charge on the new thing, “The Eternal Die.” He was chatting with Polygon on a video call—classic 2020s style. “And yeah, that’s our starting point.”
So here we dive into The Eternal Die. You step into the shoes of the queen from the first game—Queen Aleksandra, if it matters. She teams up with this dice buddy, Fortune, to tackle these shifting levels. Kinda like they’re stuck in some artifact or something. They’re just trying to get the heck outta dodge.
Storm explains, “I loved how the dice and randomness clicked with a roguelike vibe. We kicked off as a small team, aiming to build a roguelike but with that Lost in Random twist, focusing more on gameplay and combat.” Honestly, sounds ambitious, but hey, they went for it.
Switch gears from Even, the original protagonist, just chilling and whatnot, to The Eternal Die—this non-stop action fest. Seriously, it’s inspired by Hades. Everything tightens up with intense battles and snatches of story, mainly around boss arenas and run breaks. “Hades was huge for us,” Storm gushes. “Supergiant Games? Totally nailed it. They turned the roguelike world on its head with narrative and gameplay. Hats off to them.”
Now, about who’s behind this? Stormteller Games grabbed the reins, not the old crew, but here’s the twist: about half of them jumped ship from the first game. It’s like bringing the band back together, right? “With so many from the original team, it feels like we kept the spirit alive,” Storm muses.
And as for what’s next in this universe? Storm’s playing it coy. Cannot spill the beans, but more Eternal Die content is coming. “We’ve got plans brewing. Can’t spill when or what, but expect more adventures.”
