Nintendo Switch 2 Design Leaked by Case Manufacturer — Familiar Look with Larger Screen and Joy-Cons

In the past week, we’ve seen a flurry of leaks about the final design of the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The buzz peaked yesterday when Dbrand unexpectedly dropped a complete 3D render of the console. Interestingly, they showcased it enveloped in a new version of their Killswitch carrying case, specially redesigned for the Switch 2. In a chat with The Verge, Adam Ijaz, Dbrand’s CEO, commented that they relied on exact measurements obtained from a 3D scan of actual hardware. According to this, the Switch 2 spans about 270mm in width with Joy-Cons attached (200mm without them), stands 116mm tall, and is 14mm thick.

Looking at the leaked images, the Nintendo Switch 2 undeniably boasts an impressive upgrade over its predecessors. It features a significantly larger 8-inch display compared to the 7.2-inch on the Switch OLED and the 6.2-inch on the original Switch. There’s an intriguing addition of a new “C” button on the right Joy-Con—possibly for capturing content—and the Joy-Con controllers themselves are magnetically detachable with a more defined curve. Notably, it also includes USB-C ports on both the top and bottom and introduces a robust U-shaped kickstand similar to the enhanced stand seen on the Switch OLED.

As the rumored Q1 2025 launch looms, the emerging details suggest that the Switch 2 is an evolution of the Switch OLED. However, it’s likely to feature a 1080p IPS LCD screen, not an OLED, as per most leaked specifications, although this LCD promises to be of higher quality than previous models.

Regarding Dbrand’s Killswitch case design for the Switch 2, traditional elements like the full-body enclosure or expanded kickstands, common in past offerings like for the Steam Deck, have been set aside. Instead, the case is segmented to accommodate the removable Joy-Cons, with a teal bungee cord adding a stylish touch. Given Dbrand’s solid reputation for producing durable cases for phones and handheld devices, it’s safe to say the final product will meet expectations.

For those eager to see an unembellished Nintendo Switch 2, wishful thinking might have to suffice a little longer. Yet, the specifications leaked by Dbrand align with a 3D-printed model displayed on the YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week, offering a glimpse into what the console might genuinely look like.

With Dbrand apparently not under any NDA, this huge leak hints at an imminent announcement regarding the Nintendo Switch 2’s release date. Prior predictions suggested the console would launch before 2024’s end, but Nintendo’s commitment to unveiling details by March 2025 sets a ticking clock. As that deadline approaches, accessory makers like Dbrand are gearing up, clearly fueling excitement for Nintendo’s upcoming hybrid handheld innovation.
