Well, here we are at the end of an era where some lucky folks got away without spending an extra dime on Nintendo Switch Online.
Following the re-release of Xenoblade Chronicles X, a couple of beloved features are preparing to bow out, and one of them won’t make the jump to the anticipated Switch 2. Nintendo, in a recent announcement, revealed that the My Nintendo Gold program is set to phase out on March 25 at 12:59 a.m. Eastern Time. This program was a favorite among fans, mainly because it offered a little bonus: players could snag 1% back in eShop credit on physical first-party games bought within their first year, and a nice 5% on any eShop purchase. The only twist? Physical games released just before the cutoff, between March 25, 2024, and their respective end date, such as those from Endless Ocean: Luminous up to Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, will still count. However, titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond won’t be part of the deal.
In addition to this, Nintendo has updated the details on their support page concerning Switch Online Vouchers, confirming these won’t be compatible with games on the upcoming Switch 2. Currently, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can buy pairs of these vouchers at $99 US or the equivalent, redeemable for first-party games. The good news is, these vouchers will still be valid for future releases on the first-gen Switch, which includes games like Legends Z-A and Prime 4.
