If the latest buzz is anything to go by, Final Fantasy 16 is gearing up for a release on the Xbox Series X. Originally launched as a timed-exclusive for the PlayStation 5, this 2023 installment has since made its way to PC in 2024, but Xbox fans have been left waiting. Up until now, it’s been classified as a PS5 console exclusive, but that status might be shifting soon.
Square Enix, the publisher of Final Fantasy 16, appears to be stepping back from the idea of console exclusivity for its titles. There are swirling rumors about previously PlayStation-exclusive Final Fantasy games finding new homes on other platforms. Among these is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with leaks suggesting not only an Xbox debut but also a release on the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 16 seems poised to make a similar jump.
A reliable leaker, known as Ignus, recently hinted on Twitter that the Xbox version of Final Fantasy 16 will be coming “very soon,” with an announcement “just around the corner.” This exciting news is expected to drop during the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23. According to Ignus, this port will be a surprise reveal, although it’s not the mysterious game that’s been teased for the event.
The Xbox Developer Direct this year is set to feature titles like Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, along with a secretive game shrouded in mystery. Although Xbox hasn’t spilled any clues about this mystery title, it’s rumored to be a revered Japanese IP with significant historical roots. Given that Square Enix will reportedly present the Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port during the event, there’s speculation that they might also be behind this enigmatic game, though there’s no guarantee.
Speculation is rife about what this mystery game could be. Many possibilities are being considered, but if we zero in on Square Enix’s portfolio, it might help pinpoint the mystery. Could it be Kingdom Hearts 4, which, despite being revealed years ago, hasn’t had much light shed on it? Perhaps it’s the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake or another entry in the beloved Final Fantasy series. Or maybe it’s something no one has anticipated. Fans will just have to tune in to the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23 at 10 am PT to satisfy their curiosity.
