2K Launcher Eliminated — Launch 2K’s PC Games Directly via Steam Now

2K Games has completely phased out its launcher from all PC games, allowing players to access 2K titles directly through Steam without any additional software.

Previously, players had to use the 2K Launcher for games like Civilization 5, the Mafia Trilogy Definitive Edition, and XCOM 2. However, following a recent update, this launcher has been eliminated from all titles on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Even the 2K Launcher Beta has been removed for Civilization 5 players.

Now, you can dive straight into games like Bioshock Remastered, Bioshock 2 Remastered, Bioshock Infinite, The Quarry, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns just by hitting play. The process for accessing Mafia Trilogy Definitive Edition varies slightly between Steam and Epic users, but both offer more direct access now.

For Civilization 6 fans on Steam, this isn’t news— the launcher was already removed earlier this year. But those using Epic Games will find that they’ve streamlined entry as the game now opens directly. As for Civilization 5, it relies on Steam Launch options to get things going.

XCOM 2 on Steam presents a unique situation because of its mod support. Fortunately, this update includes changes that enable mod functionality on devices like the Steam Deck. If you play XCOM 2 on Epic, it now launches using the Original XCOM 2 Mod Launcher. XCOM: Chimera Squad offers a choice: launch with the Mod launcher or jump directly into the game, with mod availability also confirmed for Steam Deck.

According to a post from 2K, the 2KLauncher folder has been replaced with a simple text file (2kLauncherRemoved.txt) that you can safely delete. They advise ensuring the launcher is completely gone by closing and reopening Steam, followed by a PC reboot. For Epic users, just ensure that your game is updated with the latest patch.

Game saves should remain intact, and access to games won’t be affected if purchased through Steam or Epic. For the few who might miss the 2K Launcher, there’s no plan to bring it back. As 2K stated, “We currently have no plans to allow an optional 2K Launcher setting, but we appreciate your interest.”

This change comes as a precursor to the anticipated release of Civilization 7 in February 2025, reassuring fans they’ll be able to launch it directly through Steam.

The removal of the 2K Launcher reflects ongoing criticisms in the gaming community about publisher-specific launchers like those from Ubisoft and EA, which often serve more purposes than just starting games, such as managing cloud saves or storefronts.
